TMJ Pain | Simply Physio

Many people will even question the accuracy of this diagnosis due to the obscure and varying symptoms associated with TMJ pain. People can experience a variety of symptoms including: teeth pain, jaw pain, ear pressure, fullness in the ear, clicking and popping, headaches, dizziness, and facial/ throat pain.

We find that many patients get quite the run-around or passed off from their family doctor, to their dentist, and even to an ENT without any clear answers or solutions.

A lot of times the TMJ or jaw pain isn’t caused by anything obvious. But now, it doesn’t seem to be going away, and is getting worse!

If this is happening to you, you're not alone: we hear this type of thing all the time. We see so many people who are dealing with a variety of TMJ, jaw, neck and headache issues.

So when it comes to suffering from TMJ and Jaw pain, everybody we see wants to know:

“Why Am I Hurting?

or

“Why has nothing worked?

or

“Why isn’t my pain getting any better?”

Most people think that TMJ and jaw pain will just go away on its own. That they'll wake up one day and the pain will magically go away as if it never happened. But six weeks later, they're still having pain and not only that, it has become worse.

Does That Sound Like You?

Another scenario that we see here at our office is that people think they have an ear infection or tooth pain and go to get it checked out. The doctor then tells them that their ear is “clear” or the dentist will not find anything wrong with their teeth. Sometimes a mouth guard might be offered, and occasionally you will get referred to physical therapy.

Standard physical therapy rarely works as most clinics hardly ever work with TMJ disorders and so the one or two times a year a case presents itself- the therapist is having to review their basic notes from physical therapy school just to try to make sense of a complicated condition. Now this is fine for simple cases, but most simple cases that have persisted for more than a few weeks are not simple any more, and thus this ‘physical therapy’ ends of not working either.

A lot of times, you end up going back to the doctor again because the pain hasn’t changed. Worse of all, you are given more medications, stronger pills and advised to get more rest. And you’re rarely told by your doctor to see a TMJ specialist who can really help you sort out the complexity of the condition. This explains why so many people are living with chronic TMJ and Jaw pain.

Has This Happened to You?

Why does TMJ pain last longer than it should? It's easy to get confused because you've been told so many different things by different people. There are lots of people out there who are happy to give you advice, but not all of the things you hear are reliable.

If you don't know what you're doing, or you have received poor advice, TMJ and Jaw pain can be very confusing. Because of that many people end up accepting that pain is just part of their life.

Do You Feel That Way Too?

If You’re Currently Living With TMJ or Jaw Pain, Here are 7 Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  • You thought it would go away on it’s own - but it didn’t.
  • You went to the Doctor who told you to rest and take pain medications - but the pills either did NOT help, or helped only for a short period of time (until the pain came back again!)
  • A friend, or family told you that everybody gets pain as they get older, so you just accepted it.
  • You tried other Healthcare Professionals, or a Physical Therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help.
  • You tried YouTube exercises but they either did nothing, or made your pain worse.
  • You thought it would be a good idea to rest because your pain was so bad, but all that did was make it feel even more stiff and tight.
  • You decided to get a few massages hoping that would fix the pain, but all they did was feel nice and relaxing, and didn’t do anything to fix it long term…

If any of these things have happened to you, we would love to help you by inviting you to schedule a phone consultation with one of our TMJ specialist physical therapists. You can rest assured that you will be talking with a doctor of physical therapy who has had advanced training and understanding of this complex region. “I've been here now eight times, but I saw dramatic improvement after visit number one.

One of the procedures that they did for me was a dry needling, which I personally had never even heard of. I was looking for any kind of relief and willing to try whatever they were recommending. And so I immediately started to feel relief and I immediately started to get the extra ability to open my mouth”

“So before I came to Simply Physio, I was having almost daily migraines. I mean I could not function properly . . . I had to quit my job. . . I had previous run ins with medical professionals that they just didn’t care. They would listen to me and they would simply say oh, we’ll just give you pain medication, send you on the way. The outcome of doing a program with Simply Physio has probably the greatest impact has been my mood, my ability to be an active member of my family now . .. [and] I get to go in the gym which I haven’t been able to in years since the accident.”
