OVERVIEW

Avascular Necrosis of the Hip

Avascular necrosis is bone death caused by a deficiency in blood supply. When the blood supply is disrupted, it can be caused by a fracture, dislocation or repeated trauma to the neck. Pain, limited movement, and difficulty walking are some of the symptoms. This disorder can be diagnosed with X-rays and MRIs or a bone scan. Surgery may be required to decompress the hip or replace it completely.
