If you’ve recently suffered atennis injury or a pickleball injury– or if you’ve been suffering with an injury for a while – it’s tempting to pass it off as “nothing serious”. Put simply, you are prepared to “put up with it.”

Your favourite activities and day-to-day lifestyle can feel like a chapter that’s closing. It’s difficult not to become disheartened and end up feeling “stuck”. The questions spin around your mind, trying to comprehend if you’ll ever find a way back to your favorite activities.

Can you get back to feeling strong while suffering a tennis injury?
Can you return to the social lifestyle you enjoyed with family and friends when stuck with a pickleball injury?

It can be tempting after a while to think of yourself as a former athlete, dancer, etc.

If that’s happening to you, then don’t panic. You’re not alone – we see people going through this range of emotions after an injury all the time.

Rather than stressing yourself over tennis or pickleball injuries, I’m going to ask you to consider something.

When the healthiest and strongest athletes across the globe strain themselves and suffer an injury, do they wait and prolong their way back to health? Of course they don’t. They start their treatment and recovery the very next day.


Because they know that every extra day you aren’t active is another day you are losing wellness and strength. After all, the more strength you lose, the harder it is to recover from an injury – including injuries from tennis and pickleball.

Seeking immediate help seems to be the opposite to most people’s response when getting an athletic injury. It’s why so many people who suffer a sports injury are asking themselves:

“It’s Been Months Now – So Why Am I Still Suffering With an Injury That’s Stopping Me From Being Active and Playing My Favorite Sport?”

Most people think that when they get an injury from tennis or pickleball it’ll get better with a few days rest, and that they’ll be able to return to their sport or exercise again without assistance or action.

However, when they go back to play tennis and pickleball again as a form of exercise, they’re still restricted. Sometimes it’s even worse than it was when it first came on.

Resting may bring relief from pain for a little while, but as soon as you start up again, the pain is back. No matter how much rest you take, the pain doesn’t go away. The situation won’t improve.

Just resting does nothing to get to the why behind your tennis injury or pickleball injury. For example, the pain in your neck could actually be connected to weakness in your back. Resting your neck therefore won’t solve the problem.

Perhaps that pickleball injury or sprain from playing tennis is really due to an underlying stability and muscle imbalance that needs to be addressed.

Does That Sound Like You?

Here’s one scenario that we see all the time in our Knoxville clinic:

Someone has gone to their doctor and their (well-meaning) MD has told them to take a break, rest, and wear a support, alongside a prescription of painkillers to “see how it goes”.

However, after four weeks, they end up going back to the same doctor again because the injury hasn’t healed and the pain hasn’t gotten any better. This lands in instructions for MORE rest and even stronger painkillers.

The problem is that when it comes to sports injuries from tennis and pickleball, complete rest is rarely the best advice. And painkillers only mask the problem.

All of this conflicting information can leave you confused and frustrated. Being told different things, by different people, can cause mayhem. Maybe you think you have a back problem, but it’s actually the hip where the problem came from?

Sports injuries from tennis and pickleball can be very confusing because, more often than not, where the pain is coming from isn’t actually the area that needs to be fixed and worked on. If you rest for too long, other parts of the body become just as, if not more, problematic!

This confusion over “resting” often leads people to continue to procrastinate and put off making a decision about what to do. This doesn’t help fix their injury or assist in their return back to exercise.

Despite what some people think, rest is never the answer to solve any sports or muscle injury. In all my years as a physical therapist working with athletes, I haven’t witnessed any injury in any sport that is helped by prolonged rest.

Worse, many people just end up accepting ‘their days of being active are over’ – as if it’s normal, as if it ‘has’ to be that way.

They unintentionally choose an unnecessary limitation because they don’t believe they can get better, when more often than not, they can!

Is That How You Feel Too?

Why does pain from sporting injuries last longer than it should? It’s easy to get confused because you’ve been told so many different things by different people posing as medical experts.

There are lots of people out there who are happy to give you advice, but not all of the things you hear are reliable. Especially when it comes to tennis injury and pickleball injury.

Your pain might have been caused by something like an awkward angle around the knee when you squat or lift, but it could have been caused by other things that were never properly taken care of (poor posture, alignment issues, weakness and muscle imbalance).

These things – along with that time you lifted or squatted awkwardly – eventually caused that pain you’re now experiencing.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, or you have received poor advice, sporting pain can be very confusing. Because of that fact, many people end up accepting that pain is just part of their life.

  • You thought it would go away on it’s own – but it didn’t.
  • You went to the Doctor who told you to rest, wear a support, and take painkillers – but the pills did nothing to help, and as soon as they wore off, you were left in agonising pain again.
  • A family member, or friend, told you that everyone is more prone to Sports Injuries as they get older, so you just accepted it.

  • You’ve tried using things like heat pads, ice, and sport supports but they’ve done nothing to help make the pain better or return to exercise with ease.

  • First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. So many people procrastinate for so long, thinking that the pain will ‘just go away with time’, but then 6 months down the line they’re still putting up with it, and nothing’s changed… Or it gets worse and they’re still sitting out from playing sport, or exercise completely.
