Knee Pain

3 things you could be doing that make knee pain worse.

Knee pain isn’t always a mystery. Your shoes, how you sit, and how much you rest could all be quietly making it worse.

Painful knees are one of the most common things we see people living with. A lot of people get frustrated because they don’t understand why it’s happening: some assume it’s just part of getting older, others hope it’ll magically resolve on its own. More often than not, it’s everyday habits quietly making things worse. Here are three of the most common ones.

1. Wearing the wrong shoes

Your favorite heels or a pair of cramped dress shoes could be part of the problem. High heels change the way you walk, and tight shoes place additional stress on your knees with every step.

The fix: wear shoes with good cushioning, which absorbs impact before it reaches your knees. Specialized inserts can add extra comfort and protection, and you don’t have to give up your heels entirely: just save them for special occasions.

2. Sitting with your legs bent

Sitting at a desk with your knees bent underneath you, or with your legs crossed, stretches ligaments and muscles and holds your knee in a position it isn’t built to stay in for long stretches.

The fix: limit how long you sit with your knees bent awkwardly. Keep your feet flat, or stretch your legs out straight when you can, and try to keep moving throughout the day.

3. Taking it easy, a little too easy

Rest matters, but too much of it makes joints tight and stiff, which can make knee pain worse rather than better. Resting doesn’t mean staying still on the couch all day: it means not overdoing it.

The fix: low-impact exercise like swimming, a light walk, yoga, or cycling keeps your knees moving without adding strain, and helps you stay fit while you recover.

The takeaway

If any of these three habits sound familiar, addressing them today can help ease your knee pain and keep it from getting worse. There’s more you can do too, including exercises tailored specifically to your knee and hands-on treatment from a physical therapist, but these fundamentals are a great place to start.
