Sciatica

3 things that cause sciatica and back pain you didn’t know until now.

We’ve all heard about bad posture and lifting wrong. Here are three everyday habits that quietly make sciatica and back pain worse.

We’ve all heard and read about what can cause back pain: incorrect lifting, bad posture, a sports injury. But did you know you might be making a common mistake in your daily routine that’s quietly encouraging your back pain? Here are three things that cause sciatica and back pain that you might not know about yet.

1. Bad diet

Being overweight can have a big impact on your health and your back pain. If you’re carrying extra weight, you’re putting extra pressure on your back. When we eat sugar, any energy we don’t use gets stored, often around the lower back. If you think about all that excess weight being carried on your back, it’s not surprising a bad diet can contribute to back pain.

To help, try cutting down on sugar, caffeine, and processed foods in favor of more natural foods like chicken, fish, eggs, nuts, and vegetables.

2. Lack of exercise

Specifically, a lack of flexibility exercise. Plenty of people stay active with walks, sports, or the gym, but rarely set aside time to work on flexibility. Stretching before and after exercise helps clear the lactic acid that builds up and keeps you from getting stiffer over time.

If you notice stiffness after exercise, yoga is a great addition to your routine: it’s not just stretching, it also helps with breathing, stress, and muscle tension, all while building flexibility.

3. Longevity of your mattress

How old is your mattress, really? A mattress that was supportive when it was new gradually loses that support as the springs wear down, the same way a favorite shirt fades and frays with repeated washes.

If a new mattress isn’t in the cards right now, your pillows can help. If you sleep on your side, a pillow between your knees supports your hips and lower back. If you sleep on your back, a pillow or two under your feet changes how your spine is positioned for better support.

The takeaway

A healthy diet does more than provide good nutrition: it also eases pressure on your joints and muscles. Your mattress, as comfortable as it feels, might be quietly working against you. And flexibility work like yoga, even though it’s slow and calming, is still a real workout for your body. Small daily habits add up, for better or worse, so it’s worth taking an honest look at yours.
