If you’re working toward a healthier lifestyle, “drink more water” is usually one of the first tips you hear. True, but not exactly specific. Without proper hydration, nearly every function in the body is affected, including nutrient absorption, energy levels, mental clarity, and detoxification: no amount of good food or supplements can work the way they’re supposed to if you’re not hydrated. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often about staying hydrated.
1. Does the kind of water I drink really matter?
Yes. Filtered or reverse osmosis water is best. Tap water can carry chemicals and other substances you’d rather avoid, and a quality water filter is worth the investment. Added minerals meant to “enhance taste” are artificial additions that can diminish water’s effectiveness in the body. Keep it simple: H2O.
2. How much water does my body need?
A good baseline is half your body weight in ounces per day. If you weigh 100 lbs, that’s about 50 oz. If you’re going through a detox or cleanse, your body may need more to help flush out toxins.
3. Does caffeine affect how much water I need?
Yes. For every ounce of caffeine you drink, add an ounce of water to your daily total. For every 30 minutes you sweat, add another 8 oz. A reusable water bottle makes it easy to track how many refills you need to hit your target for the day.
4. Do other liquids count toward my daily water intake?
No. Tea, coffee, kombucha, or plant-based milks aren’t bad for you, but only pure, clear water counts toward your daily hydration goal.
5. Does timing matter?
Yes. It’s tempting to guzzle 12–16 oz at a time to hit your goal, but it’s better to drink smaller amounts more often, ideally around 3–4 oz every thirty minutes. It takes practice to build that habit, but once you adjust to being properly hydrated, you’ll wonder how you went without it.
