IASTM in Knoxville.

Scar tissue and stiff restrictions don’t stretch out on their own. We use specialized tools to find them, one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit.

What It Is

Tools that find what fingers can’t.

Old injuries leave more than a memory. Scar tissue and thickened, gritty tissue can build up underneath the skin and quietly limit how far a joint moves or how a muscle glides.

IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) uses smooth, contoured metal or plastic tools to scan your skin for those restricted, gritty spots. When your Doctor of Physical Therapy finds one, the tool’s edge works it directly.

It’s a thorough evaluation followed by a targeted release, not a generic rubdown. You’ll often feel tissue loosen in the same visit it’s found.

Questions, Answered

IASTM, no mystery.

You’ll feel pressure, and sometimes mild discomfort, over the tight or restricted spot, especially on the first pass. Most people describe it as a deep, scraping pressure that eases as the tissue loosens. Some see mild redness or light bruising afterward, which fades within a few days. We adjust pressure to what you can handle, and it’s always optional.

Not quite. A massage relaxes muscle generally. IASTM uses a rigid tool edge to specifically detect and treat scar tissue and restrictions your Doctor of Physical Therapy finds during your thorough evaluation, then follows it with movement to lock in the new range.

It depends on your plan: IASTM is often billed as part of a manual therapy visit, and insurers don’t all treat it the same way. We verify your exact benefits before your first session, so there’s no surprise on your bill. Questions before then? Call us at (865) 351-0615.
