Weeks 1–2
Pain
Calm the jaw down.
Hands-on techniques release the clenched muscles around your jaw and ease the joint irritation, starting your very first visit.
What We Treat
The clicking every time you open your mouth. The headache that starts at your jaw and creeps up your temple. It’s fixable, and it starts with a thorough evaluation, not a guess.

Why It Happens
Your jaw doesn’t click or ache for no reason. And it’s almost never just one thing. It’s usually some mix of four culprits: a jaw joint that’s tracking off-center when you open and close. Chewing muscles that stay clenched from stress long after you’ve noticed. A bite that puts uneven pressure on one side. And daily habits, clenching at your desk, grinding at night, resting your chin on your hand, that keep reloading the same joint before it can settle.
None of that shows up on a quick glance in the mirror. It takes a real, thorough evaluation to sort out which one is actually driving your symptoms. That’s why a mouthguard alone or being told to just relax more so often falls short: they manage the symptom, not the source. Find the real cause, and the fix gets obvious.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for TMJ.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Hands-on techniques release the clenched muscles around your jaw and ease the joint irritation, starting your very first visit.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Targeted mobility work restores even motion to a joint that’s been sliding off-center every time you open.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Progressive strengthening and habit retraining address the clenching and grinding patterns that got you here in the first place.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Chewing, talking, and sleeping positions get tested under real conditions before you’re cleared to go all-in: that’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.
Every plan here starts with a real evaluation, not a guess: that’s the pattern patients come back and tell us about.

Questions, Answered
Usually not as the very first step. Most TMJ improves with hands-on care and movement retraining before more invasive options are needed, and imaging often doesn’t show what’s actually driving your specific pain. We start with a hands-on evaluation of your jaw, neck, and posture to find what’s really going on, and if imaging or a guard ever becomes genuinely necessary, we’ll help you get it. You don’t have to wait to start feeling better.
Yes, in most cases gentle, guided movement helps more than keeping it still does. Avoiding wide chewing or yawning tends to make a jaw stiffer and more guarded over time. The key is dosing the right movement for your specific jaw, which is exactly what a Doctor of PT sorts out at your evaluation, then progresses safely as you improve.
Most patients feel meaningful change within 4–6 visits. A full plan for TMJ runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, typically over 8–10 weeks, depending on how long you’ve been dealing with it. Either way, you get a plan with an endpoint: you’ll always know which phase you’re in and what’s left, not an open-ended string of appointments.
